NOAA Just Cut the 2026 Hurricane Forecast Again. Here's Why I'm Still Telling People to Get the Roof Looked At.

The Short Version
- NOAA cut the 2026 Atlantic outlook on August 6 to 7–13 named storms, 2–6 hurricanes, and 0–2 major hurricanes — down from 8–14, 3–6, and 1–3 in May. Odds of a below-normal season went from 55% to 75%.

NOAA lowered its 2026 Atlantic hurricane forecast on August 6, for the second time this year. Colorado State did the same thing the day before. It has been a quiet summer — two named storms, no hurricanes — and the reasonable conclusion to draw from that is that fewer storms will form this year than in an average season.
That conclusion is correct. It is also narrower than most people take it to be. A seasonal forecast estimates how much activity develops across an entire ocean basin. It does not estimate what reaches Northeast Florida, and the two numbers move independently.
What NOAA changed
The updated outlook calls for 7 to 13 named storms, of which 2 to 6 could become hurricanes, including 0 to 2 major hurricanes. Those ranges cover the full season from June 1 through November 30 and include Arthur and Bertha, both of which have already formed and dissipated.
The May outlook was 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and 1 to 3 majors. The revision takes one storm off each end of each range.
The larger change is in confidence rather than count. NOAA raised the probability of a below-normal season from 55% to 75%, against 20% for near-normal and 5% for above-normal. Colorado State's final update held its seasonal numbers at 9 named storms, 4 hurricanes and 1 major, unchanged since July, and lowered its landfall probabilities again.

The El Niño behind it
El Niño is a warming of the equatorial Pacific. It increases vertical wind shear across the Atlantic, and shear disrupts storms before they can organize or intensify.
This year's event emerged in June and has strengthened quickly. Water in the El Niño zone is now 3.7°F above average (2.07°C, as the forecast agencies report it). Sustained readings of about 3.6°F above average are what forecasters classify as a Super El Niño, and the current figure is higher than 2015, 1997, 1991 or 1982 registered at the same point in those seasons. Some models suggest this could become the strongest event since record-keeping began in 1950.
The other seasonal factors are close to neutral. Atlantic sea surface temperatures are near average and the West African monsoon is unremarkable, so there is no competing influence offsetting the shear. That is why both forecast teams have converged, and why NOAA noted that a below-normal 2026 would be only the second season in the past decade without above-normal activity.
The part of the update that gets less attention
NOAA's release includes a point that matters more to a Northeast Florida homeowner than the storm count does.
During El Niño seasons, tropical activity tends to shift away from the central and eastern tropical Atlantic — where the long-track Cabo Verde systems form and spend a week or more crossing the ocean — and concentrate instead toward the Gulf Coast and subtropical Atlantic. Storms develop closer to land, which gives coastal communities less time to prepare.
That is a meaningful trade for a homeowner. A season can produce fewer storms overall while producing storms that arrive with shorter notice.
NOAA is also explicit that it cannot forecast how many storms will make landfall, where they will go, or how strong they will be at this range. Forecasters have pointed to 1992 as the standing example: six named storms, one of the quietest seasons on record, and the first of them was Andrew, which formed in late August and crossed South Florida as a Category 5.
What a below-normal season changes for a roof
Structurally, nothing.
Jacksonville sits in a 115 to 130 mph ultimate design wind speed zone under the Florida Building Code, along with Duval, Clay, St. Johns and Nassau counties. That is the standard your roof was permitted to, and it is not adjusted for the seasonal outlook. A storm that intensifies past that threshold before reaching Northeast Florida produces the same result in a nine-storm season as in a nineteen-storm season.
Jacksonville has its own history on this point. Matthew in 2016 and Irma in 2017 both caused significant flooding here without making landfall in the city. Neither required a direct hit to cause roof damage across the area.
The conditions that age a roof year-round are also unaffected. Sun exposure, thermal cycling and attic heat degrade shingles through every month of a quiet season. Insurance carriers underwrite on roof age and condition rather than on forecast activity, and a below-normal year does not change how a non-renewal decision gets made.
What a quiet season does change is scheduling. Contractor availability, permit turnaround and material lead times are all better now than they are in the weeks following a landfall, when demand across the region spikes at once. If an inspection has been on the list, August is a more practical month to do it than October. It is also worth confirming whether your roof qualifies for credits under a wind mitigation inspection ahead of renewal, and whether the My Safe Florida Home program would cover part of any work.
Where the season stands
August 11 is the average date of the first Atlantic hurricane. There has not been one. August 3 is the average date of the third named storm, and Cristobal has not been used.
The season is running behind schedule, but it is not finished. NOAA expects most remaining activity in the traditional August-through-October peak window, the climatological peak is September 10, and the African wave train has been increasing on schedule. The National Hurricane Center has been tracking waves in the eastern and central Atlantic this week.
