Your Roof is not a DIY Project

In today's age, you can find information on pretty much everything on the internet. With the introduction of AI, and applications like OpenAI/ChatGPT, it has never been easier to receive comprehensive solutions in seconds.

In the home improvement industry, these tools can be extremely useful. Toilet clogged? ChatGPT. Need help hanging a light fixture? A little more difficult, but still – ChatGPT.

You name it, ChatGPT or any other AI search tool will be able to give you the answers you're looking for.

The question isn't if the answers to your home improvement projects are correct, the question is whether or not you should take some things on by yourself or if you should leave it to the professionals.

Do Not Try At Home

In the instance of a roof leak, or roof problem, you can certainly take to the internet to better understand what could be happening. We would, however, not recommend you attempt to fix ANYTHING related to your roof.

This advice is for good reason:

  1. It's DANGEROUS: Your roof can be anywhere from 10-30 feet high and depending on the pitch of your roof, it could be extremely difficult to walk on, let alone fix. Aside from the height and pitch, the material it's made of can be extremely dangerous to walk on. Metal is extremely slippery, especially when wet. Asphalt shingles can also be just as slick if there is any granulation loss. Tile is very breakable and takes experience to navigate without hurting your roofing system or yourself.

  2. It could VOID your existing warranty: This is a big one that people don't consider. If you've had a roof replacement in the last 5-10 years, you very well could be under warranty from either the contractor that installed your roof or the material manufacturer. In almost every contract we've read, any work that is done to repair or restore your roof by you or anyone other than the installing contractor will result in a VOIDED warranty. If you aren't sure if your roof is still under warranty – give your contractor a call! NEXGEN Roofing warranties all of its roofs for a minimum of 5 years!

  3. You could make the damage worse! We've seen it before and we'll see it again. You go up on your roof with a tube of tar and try to seal everything in sight. Or how about just nailing in a few shingles that your roofing company left after the roof replacement a few years back? These are just two examples of things to NOT do. If you are putting nails in your roof, for example, you're creating more damage to your decking just by putting in nails that weren't previously there. More holes = more opportunities for leaks. If you're doing something like sealing vents or penetrations yourself, you'll likely just create more work for a contractor to go up and remove it which will end up costing you more money!

Call the Pros

It might not seem like it, but letting the pros do what they do best is usually a foolproof way to make sure your project is done efficiently without additional costs down the road. There are many standards that have to be abided by as a contractor that the homeowner can bypass. These standards are meant to protect you and your home.

Remember that just because you're qualified to replace your door handles, you should not be repairing or replacing your roof – I don't care WHAT ChatGPT says.

If you have questions about the process or pricing for your roof replacement or roof repair, contact NexGen. We will schedule a free inspection and consultation to walk you through the right solution – the first time!
